This organization exists and grows only if it attracts new members and retains them. Hundreds of thousands of adult males and families do not know that HEA even exists. Newcomers to HEA are often very much in need of education and support. We need to build HEA in ways that continue to be useful to members long after their first initial contact. As humans grow and their needs change so do members grow and new issues emerge. We need to develop our leaders to give back to future generations, that which was given to them and to insure that never again will people lack education and support.
Our website is the principal way that HEA does outreach to the community. We need members who are website-building specialists to help us build this new site and to keep it current as the world’s educational resource. We also need people who have ideas about content and layout (no website-building experience required for these folks). We need to build the message and chat room areas so that members can access experienced members and health care professionals to help guide them in their journeys.
Since our beginning we have held conferences in Denver, Colorado, Toronto, Canada, San Jose, California, New York City and this year in Norfolk, Virginia. We will need people to choose next year’s site and to plan for this conference.
Not everyone has a computer today (imagine that?). Our periodic newsletter is a way to provide members with a connection to the HEA community and to provide some education and support.
For being one of the most common birth differences why is it no one has ever heard of a hypo/epispadias? HEA has done a fine job in educating members and pediatric urologists. We need to broaden our focus now to include mental health professions, nursing, and educators. HEA needs to create education brochures that will be helpful on how to care for people with any genital differences. We need to develop speakers/curriculum to present to the helping profession how to better serve this population. We also have a 30 second and 60 sec Public Service Announcement (PSA) that we distributed to radio stations across the states.
We are proud and amazed at our fundraiser history. We have raised operating expenses by membership fees, major donors, conference fees, theatre parties, dinner parties, corporate matching contributions, we even bought, repaired and resold a car! We need people who are willing to help write grants, host an event, or let us help you, large or small, create an event that would be both educational as well as turn even a small profit. We have a huge grab-bag of easy low cost event ideas. We just need people who will work on them with plenty of board support.
We need members who are willing to work on helping us develop local chapters in major cities. We can provide you with materials, network connections in your area, and come to your site to help you organize.
Let us know if you have any ideas.
