Chordee
by Douglas J
Chordee is a medical term to describe bending or bowing of an erect penis. Chordee can accompany hypospadias, but can occur by itself. Most penises are not totally straight, and almost all males have some degree of chordee. Chordee associated with hypospadias normally is seen as a tilted glans where the end of the penis appears bent down, although it can also involve the entire shaft of the penis in a curve like a banana. When chordee interferes with sexual intercourse or causes painful erections, surgery is almost always successful in relieving the condition. Chordee complicates hypospadias repair, and in some cases a two stage approach where the chordee is corrected first and the hypospadias is repaired later, is chosen.
Chordee is not the same as Peyronies' Disease. Chordee is a result of the development of internal structures of the penis that cause bending or bowing, and is congenital. Peyronie's Disease is an aquired condition resulting from local changes in the makeup of connective tissues (plaque formation) over a short period of time in the penis, and most often occurs in cases of trauma to an erect penis.
